When I was in high school there was a girl that I really liked, but I had no idea how to approach her. She was a Junior and very popular in school and I was a freshman slightly buried in the shadow of my older brothers. Because I didn’t have my own reputation to stand on, I decided to write her a letter and had a friend deliver it to her. This plan was going to work perfectly but it actually went horribly wrong!
The girl never got the letter and to make matters worse, someone found it and read it out loud in the cafeteria. When I went to lunch people were looking, laughing, pointing, smiling and having a good time at my expense. At first, I didn’t know what was going on until my older brother held up my letter and asked, “what is this about?” My chances with this girl were ruined and as time unfolded nothing ever developed between me and her.
As embarrassing of an experience as that was it taught me a very valuable business and career lesson; Effective communication is critical to your success. Think about a job interview or a meeting with a big client; whether you get the job depends on how well you tell your story and convince them that you are the best option for them. Now if you are going to get good at communicating you must look at both traditional and nontraditional methods.
Here are a couple of tips you can use to help get your message across clearly:
Update your Linked In and social media profile both customers and employers look you up so make sure it’s sending the right message.
Don’t hide behind technology when you have the option to talk or meet in person you should; the confidence in your voice can help get your message across better.
Actually “practice” telling your story to make it clean, clear and interesting. Your story is too good to just make it up as you go so practice it frequently. Remember; no one can tell your story like you can.
